چکیده

1. The DPN+, DPNH, TPN+ and TPNH contents of a variety of animal tissues have been determined. 2. In all the tissues investigated DPN is present mainly in the oxidized form, whereas TPN is present chiefly and sometimes exclusively in the reduced form. 3. High total concentrations of both DPN and TPN are found in liver, adrenals, kidney and lactating mammary glands. The high level of TPN in ovary and the low levels in brain and voluntary muscle are also of interest.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase of adrenal tissue.

The direct oxidative pathway of glucose utilization or the hexose monophosphate shunt has received a great deal of attention recently, and numerous attempts have been made to evaluate its importance in various tissues. Glock and McLean, in making a survey of the levels of enzymes of this pathway in a number of mammalian tissues, recently reported unusually high activity in the adrenal glands, p...

The metabolism of variously C14-labeled glucose in man and an estimation of the extent of glucose metabolism by the hexose monophosphate pathway.

Studies of glucose metabolism utilizing radioactive glucose have been reported in several animal species (1-3) including normal and diabetic man (4-6). In these studies the tracer employed has been glucose with the C14 uniformly distributed throughout the six carbon atoms. From the reactions of glucose catabolism in the EmbdenMeyerhof pathway, Krebs' tricarboxylic acid cycle and the hexose mono...

Neonatal Screening for G6PD Deficiency in Mazandaran Province, Iran 2007-2010

Background: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is the most common disease of the hexose monophosphate pathway existing in more than 400 million people worldwide. The aim of this study was to identify neonates with G6PD deficiency following national program for screening and education of affected newborns’ parents started since June 2007 in Mazandaran, a northern Province of Ira...

A coupled reaction catalyzed by the enzymes transketolase and transaldolase.

The formation of pentose phosphate from hexose monophosphate involves either the oxidative pathway from glucose 6phosphate through 6-phosphogluconate or the series of nonoxidative transfer reactions catalyzed by transketolase and transaldolase, in which sedoheptulose 7-phosphate is an intermediate (1). In mammalian tissues the nonoxidative pathway appears to play a major role (2-5), accounting ...

Respiration and glucose oxidation in human and guinea pig leukocytes: comparative studies.

A comparison has been made of the metabolic shifts in human and guinea pig leukocytes when they phagocytize. Respiration of guinea pig polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) and the increment during phagocytosis were each about 2(1/2)-fold that of human PMN. This was also true of the direct oxidation of glucose-6-P (hexose monophosphate shunt). Enzymes potentially responsible for these phenomena ha...
